I did some networking and was able to secure another internship opportunity! You never know where you will find them; social media, friends, workplaces, or classes. It’s worth asking around. I have an opportunity lined up to do a website for a local church in the Oshkosh area. I’ll be working out the details and sending a Project Scope plan to Tammy within the week!

Right now I have just wrapped on the Competitive Analysis and Audience Analysis to get a better understanding of the business, its needs, and the needs of its audience.

Website development is progressing smoothly; with the Analysis work out of the way I have a better understanding of what can be worked into the transition to WordPress that would match the capabilities of the existing website and take advantage of the features provided by the move to WordPress, like various plugins for pop-up messages, animations, and forms.

When working on the Analysis papers, I wanted to know if there were methods you could use to determine how a website was built. Specifically, if it was built using WordPress.

There are 5 possible methods in which you can check:

  • Check the Site’s Source Code
  • Visit the License.txt File
  • Visit C WordPress URLs
  • Check Websites With Usage Data
  • Use the Chrome Sniffer Extension

I have secured and finalized the internship I had talked about the past two weeks. Because of this I am currently keeping my ear to the ground as I work through my current internship; I have set up notifications for positions through LinkedIn & Handshake, and I’m going to reach out through social media to see if perhaps one of my artist friends would like some assistance building a portfolio website.

As stated the past two weeks, I am working on a website update/migration for the limousine business. Right now I am focused on downloading the existing assets and logging the color scheme to make a client identity board. I am also focused on backing up the existing website, especially the Contact Us form to determine how best to implement that within the WordPress format.

the experiences you are having

Right now I am just beginning to get my feet wet; I have just received the signed project scope from Tammy today, and I know that I was not to begin work until that was finished. It was important for me to go through the multiple revisions to understand ways I need to be more concise and clear in my vision regarding objectives/goals. There was definitely some condensing and tweaking that needed to be made to the language used so the client could better understand what I was looking to achieve.

I have been researching tools that can be used for developers to download and backup websites not hosted by them. So far, popular tools I have found include:

  • HTTrack (Windows, Free)
  • SurfOffline (Windows, Paid, $120 license)
  • SiteSucker (Mac, Paid, $4.99)

You can also use more manual methods, such as right clicking on the website, choosing “Save Page As”, and selecting “Website, Complete”. This will download the current and related pages as long as the server doesn’t need permission to access the pages (ex. account pages that require logging in).

There’s also the very popular wget command, which can be invoked from a command line or terminal prompt. When the syntax is learned, you can utilize wget to download multiple URLs automatically into a directory.

Internship Blog – Week 2

the internship seeking activities you are doing

As I mentioned last week, I have succeeded in finding an internship. With this week’s assignment, I have updated my LinkedIn page to be more comprehensive of my current employment, schooling, and various other noteworthy information about me since last updating the site in the end of Spring of last year. I have notifications set to weekly for job opportunities in web development within a 25km radius of me, so here’s hoping things come through!

the internship work you are doing

I do have an internship lined up with the limousine business, and I’m working with Tammy and my Client to work out the finer details, including pay and objectives. There are plenty of ideas on how I want to tackle this website, but I have to refrain and remain focused on completing and receiving an approved Project Scope before work can begin.

the experiences you are having

Within the series of emails between myself and Tammy, I have experienced that I am not great at defining what I want to do with the website. I am certainly more focused on replicating the functionality of the website rather than updating the looks; the limousine company receives a majority of his business by people finding him on the web. In that sense it is crucial that the Form and Contact methods remain in tact through the transition. I just needed to elaborate further on the rest of what I wanted to with the site.

Welcome to Week 1 of my new Project Blog! The following is a brief overview to catch you up to speed on where I was when I had started this course.

the internship seeking activities you are doing

Currently, I have found an internship, but will be keeping my eyes peeled for more opportunities during the semester! Right now I am focused on wrapping the Project Proposal for the internship I currently have lined up. As I go through it, I will continue to search Indeed and Handshake for more opportunities that suit the obligations of my existing full-time job.

The work I’ll be doing is updating a website for a limousine business. This website has been run and managed for 10 years under the care of my Mom, and while she is tech-savvy, she admits that improvements beyond what is already there from the GoDaddy Sitebuilder WYSIWYG is beyond her capabilities and limited knowledge. So, I will be taking the website to the modern era with a transition to WordPress

the experiences you are having

Overall, I am having a good time discussing the project and it’s finer details in the Project Proposal with Tammy. I’m having a lot of ideas flying through my head about what I could do based on my past projects. But as I know from my time with IMD, it’s better to stick with the script of the Scoring Guide first, then polish to excellence. This is especially important in terms of crucial functionality on the existing site that needs to transition smoothly; therefore my focus will be on migration rather than revitalization.
